Stuttgart - für den Sport The capital of Baden-Württemberg is a great patron of sports, ranging from popular to professional sports. Stuttgart is a sports city with a long tradition. Many top-class sports events have become a permanent fixture in Stuttgart’s sports calendar and underline its reputation as city of sports. Just as important as top-class and competitive sports are physical training programs for everyone, especially in a major city. Stuttgart is an attractive, sport- and exercise-friendly place, which provides its citizens many opportunities for physical exercise in all areas of life.
Over 590 sports clubs and organisations in Stuttgart offer their 168,000 members around 5,000 training and competition facilities for over 70 different sports. The vast sports program is facilitated by an impressive voluntary engagement of Stuttgart’s citizens. Stuttgart’s department of sports and exercise (Amt für Sport und Bewegung) gladly supports sports clubs and events within the bounds of the city’s sports promotion guidelines. For the past decades, the city has invested several hundred million in the construction, restoration and maintenance of sports facilities.
With round about 52,000 members, “Schwaben and Stuttgart” are the largest divisions of the German Alpine Association (DAV) in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Beside the Stuttgart groups, the division comprises nine district groups as well as the regional group “Sudeten” with many activities in the federal state and in the Alps. The youth groups of the DAV division have been developing many outstanding climbers and mountaineers. The club’s objectives include a large variety of ecologically sound mountaineering ventures, training and education, competitions, nature protection and landscape conservation in the mountains as well as youth and family work in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The division operates several climbing facilities, e.g. in Kirchheim, Aalen or Calw and is one of the two carriers of Stuttgart’s climbing center. Nine of the division’s cabins are suitable for mountaineering and ski mountaineering activities, three of which are located in the Swabian Alb and the six in the Alps. Flathold was born of the encounter between an international route setter and a visual arts student, whose first experience together dates back to 2008. A common goal : to create and develop shapes and grips, to fashion the foam so as to approach the feelings one gets on a natural line. Testing gravity on the grips ; imagining the movement possibilities they can offer on a wall ; feeling the friction point. Beyond their basic function, the goal is to make the holds aesthetic.
